OLD VETERAN SUMMONED ON MEMORIAL DAY

James Calvin Fry, a well known soldier, died at his home in Glenwood yesterday afternoon at about 3:30. It was peculiarly appropriate that he should pass away on the day set aside by the nation to honor the memory of her heroic dead.

Mr Fry did not join his comrades in the march to the cemetery. He has been poorly of late and his absence was not wondered at. He had been somewhat indisposed for two days, but was up and around a little yesterday. Heart trouble caused his death.

It is noteworthy that Mr. Fry was a next door neighbor to Wilson Williams, a veteran who passed away less than two months ago and who was the only old soldier to die at Glenwood since Decoration Day of last year.

Mr. Fry had been a resident of Glenwood for about 25 years. For 15 years he was sexton at the cemetery and in that time he buried 700 people, a number of whom were his old comrades in arms.

He was born in Morgan county, Alabama, August 1, 1824, and was nearly 83 years of age. He saw two years of service in the civil war as a member of company D of the first Missouri cavalry. He enlisted in August, 1862, and was discharged on account of disability August 10, 1864.

He is survived by a wife to whom he was married in 1844, their married life extending over a period of 63 years—another remarkable fact. Their one child was buried at Glenwood some years ago.

The funeral services will take place at the home Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock and the G. A. R. post will be present in a body, his comrades acting as pall bearers. The service will be conducted by his pastor, Rev. Roy Lucas of the Christian church.
