A. D. French Mustered Out of Earthly Service

A. D. French , 97, the last Civil war veteran of this community, passed away at his home, in this city, Wednesday evening. The body was removed to the Raynor Funeral home, and services will be held in the Congregational church, of which he was Deacon Emeritus, on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. The service will be conducted by the pastor, Dr. Frederick W. Long. The body will be buried with military honors, in the Glenwood cemetery. Officers of the local American Legion post will have charge of the burial service.

Mr. French, who came to Mills county at the close of the Civil war, lived at Emerson, later at Hastings, and has been a resident of this community for over half a century. He served Mills county as county treasurer, and was actively identified with banking interests here, until the time of his retirement from active business life, about twenty years ago. He enjoyed the respect and esteem of the entire community, and during the active years of his life, was one of the community’s most influential citizens.

His passing marks the passing of the last of the G. A. R. in this community, but the memory of these men will always live in the grateful remembrance, each succeeding generation will have for the service they rendered in the preservation of the Union.
