Mrs. Mary A. Smith
Mary A. Smith, nee Mumea, was born in Columbus Grove, Putnam County, Ohio, April 22, 1839. She was married to Wm. Sigafoos August 22, 1857. Four years later, at the beginning of the Civil war, her husband enlisted, and was mortally wounded at the battle of Nashville, Tenn., dying in two weeks as a result.
She united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1852 and in 1877 with the her husband, Mr. Smith, came to Mills County, residing on the farm until her removal to Glenwood in 1892. She has lived in the home in which she passed away on the evening of March 29, for the past twenty-one years.
For years she was active in the work of the church, but failing health for the past two and one-half years has prevented here(sic) from even attending the services of the church very often.
Two children were born to her, one dying in infancy. The other child, Mrs. Holder, has been present with her mother in her final sickness, and, with her brother, Mr. Mumea, and her grandaughter, Mrs. G. B. VanHorn, had done all that could be done to make her pathway to the grave as smooth as possible.
Two brothers, one daughter, a grand daughter and four great grand children remain to feel and know her loss.
