page 5H. L. Vandenberg an inmate of the Soldier's Home, at Leavenworth, Kansas, was in town last week soliciting aid to purchase an artificial leg. Mr. Vandenberg was at one time a resident of Mills county, living on the farm now owned by James Keenan. He went through the entire war without receiving a scratch and came home to have his leg mashed off on a railroad.
The lost member was replaced with an artificial limb and this in turn was demolished and the remaining portion of the leg badly bruised by the fall of a horse Mr. V. was riding. His has been rather a sad experience.
