COTTAMAS

Thomas Cottamas, (Cottoms) aged 48, a well-known colored veteran, died of quick consumption following a repeated attack of grip. He was born a slave and came north with the Thirteenth Iowa infantry, and returned from Monroe county with that regiment to the south, remaining with it a year when he was transferred to a colored regiment, serving in all three years and a half. He was noted locally for his great strength. He left a widow and seven children. Altho he was not a member of the G.A.R. post, Commander J. E. Wildman called the post to attend the funeral, which was held the following Thursday.
