Pella's Weekblad, dated Jan 7, 1871, Plaatselijk Nieuws: Today, fell asleep after a long and patient suffering, my most beloved husband, Johanes Berkhout, at the age of 67 years, of which I had been happily united with him in marriage for 34 years. Since having returned from the Nederlands for over three years, he has suffered much and sorrowfully, and the peace which he sought here in vain has now been granted to him by his nearness to his Savior, Jesus Christ. That joyful expectation makes me rest in the will of the Lord.
Widow G. Berkhout, nee Smit. Amsterdam, Dec 3, 1870.

[Translated by J. Smith. Please note an expert translator, G. Deltscheff, was consulted as this can be translated in two ways. The option above or could be: "Since having returned TO the Nederlands…." It should be noted that Amsterdam adds to the confusion as there was an Amsterdam south of Pella, and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. It is up to descendants to check other records for clarity. The date of death and date of announcement might indicate he lived in Marion County. Also, his given name was as listed with only one "n" in Johannes.]
