Deyona Gayle Van Der Wilt was born on February 11, 1922, to Loren and Mamie Sparks Stewart in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She received her early education in the Lynville/Sully area and graduated from Lynville High School and attended Central College. On February 7, 1945, she was united in marriage with Lester Van Der Wilt in Oskaloosa, Iowa. They had one son, Dale. Deyona and Lester lived in Sully, Iowa, the first part of their married life. Later they moved to Pella where they have resided for the past forty-five years. Deyona had been a bookkeeper at the Sully Creamery, the superintendent's secretary at Lynville-Sully schools, Central College's supervisor of clerical office and office personnel, co-owner of Duncan's Motel and Cafe at Monroe, bookkeeper at Pella Medical Center, and manager of the Pella Senior Meal Program.

Deyona was currently a member of the First Reformed Church in Pella. Deyona went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at Jefferson Place in Pella at the age of ninety. Those left to cherish her memory are: her husband, Lester; her son and his wife, Dale and Eileen Van Der Wilt of Des Moines; three granddaughters and their husbands; Lisa and Aaron Shileny, Jodi and James Hogan, and Tricia and Mark Fleagle; and two great grandchildren: Ryan Shileny and Rachel Hogan.

Deyona was preceded in death by her parents and brother, William.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 17, 2012, at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella. Burial took place at the Woodland Cemetery near Lynnville, Iowa. The Garden Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
