Earl Boland, age 86, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, passed away Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa with Rev. Bob Dean officiating. Burial will be at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa with military honors by the Harry L. Anderson Post #34 of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2237 and Disabled American Veterans Post #21. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be at the funeral chapel from 4-7 p.m. to greet visitors. Memorial contributions may be made to Central United Methodist Church or Mahaska Hospice.
Earl Raymond Boland, son of Edward John and Alta Iola Miller Boland, was born Aug. 11, 1923, in Harvey, Iowa. Earl attended Wapello and Monroe County Schools. He went on to attend junior college in Albia.
He was united in marriage with Juanita Margaret Reis Feb. 10, 1943, in Unionville, Mo. Earl enlisted in the United States Marine Corp Sept. 27, 1943. During his tour, Earl was injured and spent 25 months at Bremerton Naval Hospital in Washington State. He was discharged as a corporal Jan. 5, 1947. Upon his return, he and Juanita made their home in Albia, and he attended Iowa Success School in Ottumwa. After completing his education, Earl and Juanita moved to Ottumwa, where Earl took a job as bookkeeper and office manager with S and A Motors, a Lincoln/Mercury dealer. In 1959, they moved to Oskaloosa, where Earl was employed by F.H. Blomgren, first as a staff accountant and later as a C.P.A. Earl began his career at Mahaska Hospital in 1967 as controller and became administrator in March 1974. He retired Jan. 1, 1987. Earl was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative and finance boards. He was a past board member of the S.E. Iowa Blood Bank Board and a past member of Kiwanis, Iowa Society of C.P.A.s and the American Legion. He was life member of the Disabled American Veterans Post #21. Earl enjoyed hunting and target shooting, was a member of the National Rifle Association and was a member and served on the board of the Isaac Walton League. Earl also enjoyed traveling, NASCAR races and tractor rides.
Earl's family includes a daughter, Linda (Jim) Reid of Metamora, Ill.; a son, Richard (Nancy) Boland of Oskaloosa; grandsons, Bill (Ann) Reid of Columbus, Ind., and Nicholas Boland of Oskaloosa and a granddaughter, Laura (D.J.) Svihlik of Birmingham, Ala. Besides his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita, on Nov. 22, 2005, and a sister, Cathryn Morrow.
