Hamilton Brown, who was living alone since his wife died last spring, was found dead Sunday morning, Sept. 23, about 7 o'clock a.m. He had been working on Saturday out in his pasture, repairing a dam across a slough, and must have died some time in the afternoon. On Sunday morning his son Jared noticed his horse at the gate with harness on and knew some thing must be wrong. He made a search and found him lying dead where he had been at work. From all appearances he had died without a struggle and had undoubtedly died of heart failure, to which he had been subject for many years. This being the fact, the coroner was notified and an inquest was not deemed necessary. Hamilton Brown was born in Ohio, March 22, 1833, and was 73 years and 6 months old. He leaves three songs, Reed, W.J., and Rev. Bruce Brown, to mourn his departure. Hamilton Brown had lived in Iowa for 54 years and had lived to see the state grow from a barren prairie to be the most prosperous in the Union. He had many friends, but enemies he had none. He was upright and honest in all his dealings, was kind and generous, without a fault. He was a member of the Christian church for many years. His funeral was conducted by Rev. Petitt, of Avery, at his home, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, and interment was made in Wymore cemetery. The funeral procession was one of the largest in many years (Oskaloosa Herald, Sept. 27, 1906, p. 5)
