Vernon Dies In California

A private graveside service for Don Vernon, 87, former Fairfield Resident, of Palo Alto, Calif., was held Nov. 2 at Alta Mesa Cemetery in Palo Alto.

Vernon died Oct. 29 at Stanford University Hospital of complications following surgery. His wife, Helen, died five weeks before him.

He was born in Crawfordsville, Jan. 6, 1889, and lived most of his life in Iowa. He was a resident of Palo Alto for 20 years after he retired from employment with the State of Iowa as a sales tax inspector.

He attended public schools in Oskaloosa and during his early years was a butcher and salesman. He also held positions as conservation officer and business manager of a state hospital.

He was well-known for his organization of political rallies for the Republican Party.

He is survived by three sons.
