NANCY DARLENE DOONAN

Nancy Doonan, 82, of Barnes City, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2016 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 26 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Barnes City Cemetery at Barnes City, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Barnes City Cemetery.

Nancy Darlene Doonan, daughter of Oliver and Bertha Small Mason was born on February 12, 1934 at her rural home in Keokuk County. She was the youngest of 13 children plus three half-sisters. She attended country school and graduated from Barnes City High School in 1952. She played basketball, softball and was a cheerleader. Nancy married her childhood sweetheart, Larry Doonan, on May 25, 1952. They made their home in Barnes City until Larry was drafted in 1953. After their military life, they made their home around the Barnes City area. They were the parents of four sons and one daughter. Nancy was very active and busy raising their family. In 1967, Nancy decided to go back to college where she graduated in 1971 with her Bachelor's Degree. She was a member of the School Board, American Legion Auxiliary, Guild and the Ruritan. She enjoyed square dancing, State Fair camping, Kansas City Royals baseball trips and spending time playing pitch with her sisters and was pitch champion of Barnes City with Dave Robbins. Her family and grandchildren were her greatest joy.

Nancy is preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Ina, Oren, Norman, Paul, Ivalene, May, Wanda, Wilma, William, Edith, and Walter as well as her half sisters Gail, Aleen and Helen.

She is survived by her husband, Larry Doonan of Barnes City and her children, Richard of Barnes City, Michael (Brenda) of Barnes City, Kelly Sue (Craig) Jackson of Phoenix, James of Newton, and Jason (Karen) of Newton; grandchildren Dustin (Dana), Jacob (Arianne), Brett, Joshua (Evelin), Ryan (Alicia), Isaac, Erin, Emily and Olivia; great grandchildren, Lucian, Liam, Ella, Riley, Madeline, Kynaston, Lane, Keeton, Cooper and her brother, Ernest Mason of Oskaloosa, Iowa.
