Robert B Murrell, 89, passed away September 6, 2024 in Melbourne FL. Robert (Bob) was born November 19, 1934 in Winterset IA, to David and Merle (Marston) Murrell. He attended school in Perry, IA, graduating in 1953 and then attended Iowa State University where he graduated in Agricultural Education in 1957. He married his high school sweetheart, Janette Murrell, on April 18, 1954. Janette predeceased in 2021.
In 1957 Bob and Jan moved to Elkader, IA where Robert taught high school vocational agriculture. Bob then moved the Morrison Co-op, before beginning his career as a cooperative manager upon returning to Elkader in 1964. After several years as a business analyst with Land O Lakes, he used his debt restructuring skills and returned to managing at the West Union Co-op, before spending the last 12 years managing the Clarence Co-op. Bob and Jan retired to Lead Hill, AR in 1996. Retirement provided the time to spend on his hobbies of woodworking, fishing, motorcycle vacations and Branson MO entertainment, and where became a Master Gardener. Bob and Jan’s next retirement location was to the favorable climate in Melbourne FL in 2016.
Bob was active in church and community functions throughout his life. He was a member of the Elkader JC’s, West Union Lodge No 69 of the Grand Lodge of Iowa, and West Union Ambulance Service, West Union Chamber of Commerce, Clarence IA Lions Club, where he was bestowed the prestigious Melvin Jones Award, and the Associated Benefits retirement board of directors. Bob was always involved in the churches he attended, including multiple boards and committees.
Bob is survived by his children Michael (Deborah) Murrell of Cedar Rapids, Lizabeth (William) Harris of Melbourne FL, and Marty Murrell of Charlotte IA; grandchildren Sarah Swenson, Luke Murrell, Wade Harris, Moira and Maclane Murrell, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Bob was predeceased by his sister and parents, and was the longest living member of his family tree.
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel United Methodist Church on September 12th at 11:00. Memorials can be made to Emmanuel United Methodist in Melbourne. Interment will be at the cemetery in Winterset IA on April 12, 2025.
