J. Robert Cornell, 78, Dies; Services Monday Afternoon

J. Robert Cornell, 78, past president of First National Bank of Spirit Lake and chairman of the board of directors, died Thursday night at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at First United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. B. J. Swede officiating. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery with Harpole-Tenold Funeral Home in charge.

Job Robert Cornell was born August 3, 1890 at Winterset, Iowa, the son of Wilber and Nettie Wilson Cornell. He attended school in Winterset, graduating from high school in 1908.

Mr. Cornell then enrolled at the University of Iowa and received the degree of L.L.B. in 1914. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

In 1916, he was united in marriage to Joyce Reed of Gary, S.D. Two children were born to this union: Robert Reed Cornell of Spirit Lake and Nancy Jane (Mrs. A. M. Handell of Dixon, Ill.)

From 1914 through 1918 Mr. Cornell was employed by the Redpath Chautauqua Co. Before moving to Spirit Lake in 1935, he also managed the Midland Lyceum Bureau and was employed in the Winterset bank.

As a member of the First National Bank staff, he served as cashier, vice-president, president, and chairman of the board. Mr. Cornell was also elected vice-president of the Iowa Bankers Association.

During World War II he was a member of the draft board. Mr. Cornell served as an officer in many civic and church organizations: President of the Chamber of Commerce, secretary and president of Rotary, treasurer of the Spirit Lake Community School, ordained elder and treasurer of the First United Presbyterian Church.

In 1962 he was named by the local Kiwanis Club as “Man of the Year.”

Mr. Cornell is survived by his wife Joyce; a son, Robert R.; a daughter, Mrs. A. M. Handell; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John; and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Frost.

Pallbearers were Peter B. Narey, Berkley Bedell, Glenn Carver, Dr. A. L. Klein, Blaine Hoien, W. E. Beck. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Currell, James Currell, Richard Currell, R. S. Knight, Arnold Cook, Wayne Vallie, Milton Davis, Darwin Myrick.
