Orma Jane Schafer was born the daughter of Otto & Alice Thomassen Wishmire on September 13, 1922 in Van Meter, Iowa. Orma grew up on the family farm and graduated from the Van Meter High School. Orma and her family attended the Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Van Meter, and during that time Orma was confirmed at that country church. On February 23, 1943 Walter and Orma were united in marriage in Long Beach, California where Walter was serving in the U.S. Army. This union was blessed with two children: Charles and Jean.

After returning to Dexter, Iowa, Orma and Walter were involved in various business ventures in and around the Dexter area. Walter died in 1983 and Orma kept busy by spending a great deal of time keeping a very tidy yard working with her garden and flowers. Orma also enjoyed sewing and was a very accomplished seamstress. Orma also enjoyed such things as bowling and traveling, however her favorite pastime was playing cards. She enjoyed playing any kind of cards, however had a passion for playing bridge and belonged to the bridge marathon in and around Dexter for many years.

Orma has recently been hospitalized for the treatment of cancer and died in the Madison County Hospital on March 19, 1995. She leaves the following relatives to celebrate her life: son Charles Otto Schafer of Dexter; daughter Jean Parker and husband Marion of Earlham; sisters Mildred Smith of Van Meter and Florence Haasl of Minneapolis; 5 grandchildren: Douglas and Kimberly Schafer of Denmark, Iowa, Lauri and Joni Parker of San Antonio, Texas, and Jeff Parker of Earlham, and 2 great grandchildren. Orma was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Walter.

Interment was in Dexter cemetery.
