Fred S. Cook was born December 20, 1899 in Valley Junction, Iowa and grew up in Madison County and worked on his father’s farm. He died February 13, 1989 in Biloxi, Miss., at the age of 89.

He married Helen A. Olsen at Boone. He attended school for motor mechanics in Kansas City and was employed by Wilson Brothers in Stuart, Menlo and Guthrie Center. Later, he was employed by Charles Fogg at Fogg’s Garage in Guthrie Center.

In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy, U.S. Naval construction battalion and served three years in the South Pacific building Marine landing strips. After WWII he operated the Cook Motor Company until 1968.

In 1982, due to his wife’s illness, they moved to Biloxi, Miss to have the care of their daughter.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Cook and his parents.

Survivors are his wife, Helen; a daughter, Laura Jean and husband Richard Peacock; a granddaughter, Christine and husband Carroll Woodell; a grandson, Todd Peacock and wife Linda; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were February 16 at the Bredford-Okeefe Funeral Home, with burial at Biloxi National Cemetery with military honors by the USNCB at Gulfport.
