1920 - 2018

Waukee - Jeanette Thompson Forret, 97, died Thursday, March 8, 2018, at Fountain West Health Care Center in West Des Moines after a lengthy stay. She will always be remembered for her quip "DON'T GET OLD!"

Jeanette was born in rural Patterson, IA on December 20, 1920, to Henry Ward and Maud (Sackett) Greenwood. She attended school in Patterson until the family moved to a farm near Winterset, IA.

Jeanette married Carl Victor Forret on August 10, 1941 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Van Meter, IA. Jeanette and Carl both had a passion for music and dance. They began married life on a farm in Booneville, IA where they raised their two sons Robert (Bob) and Willis (Bill) Forret for a few years. The family relocated to the Forret family farm near West Des Moines where Jeanette and Carl farmed until they moved to Waukee in 1969. Jeanette was a homemaker who was known for her cooking skills. She loved to make quilts and knit afghans, making one of each for her grandchildren. During retirement, Jeanette and Carl traveled around the United States and enjoyed winters in Donna, Texas.

After Carl's death in 1984, Jeanette reconnected with a widowed family friend, Gale "Shorty" Thompson. They married on April 2, 1996, residing in Waukee and traveling to Donna, Texas during the winter.

Jeanette is survived by her sons, Bob (Barb) Forret of Kansas City, MO and Bill (Dena) Forret of Waukee; five grandchildren - Eric (Laura), Matt, Angela, Mark, and Katie (Jeff) Klein; eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother George Greenwood of Phoenix, AZ. She is preceded in death by her husbands, parents, and siblings - Walter Greenwood, Lela Martin, Ruth Abel, and Wanda Parkins.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2018, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waukee, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Waukee Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the or Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waukee.
