February 9, 1931 - February 17, 2018

Fred Martens, 87, of Winterset died Saturday, February 17, 2018, at West Bridge Care and Rehab in Winterset.

A visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, February 20, at Ochiltree Funeral Service, where family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 21, at the Trinity Lutheran Church near Van Meter with committal and military honors to follow in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post #403 of Van Meter or HCI Hospice Care Services.

Frederick Rohland Martens was born on the family farm in Madison Township of Madison County, Iowa on February 9, 1931, the son of Fred B. and Fernanda (Lienemann) Martens. He was a 1948 graduate of DeSoto High School and went on to serve in the United States Army as a Paratrooper during the Korean War. His marriage to Helen Marquardt took place at Trinity Lutheran Church on January 15, 1955.

Fred was a farmer all of his life and was a life-long member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, where he held various offices and was very involved. He was a member of the American Legion Post #403 of Van Meter and the Madison County Farm Bureau. Fred served on the Booneville Coop board of directors for many years as well as serving on the DeSoto and ADM School Boards.

Fred is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Martens; two sons, Frederick (Rita) Martens, Bryan Martens all of Winterset and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Jordt of Des Moines. He is also survived by two sisters, Dolores Harvey of Mukwonago, WI and Gloria (Gary) McIntyre of Twin Lakes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Joyce and Janice Martens and two brothers-in-law, Robert Harvey and Dr. Maurice Kraushaar.
