Abraham Kephart was born August 4th, 1830 in Montgomery county, Indiana, and died January the 28th, 1904, in Woods county, Oklahoma. He came to Iowa the fall of 1853, settled in Mahaska county, was married to Telitha McMains August 3d, 1854, and moved to Madison county, Iowa in the spring of 1857. In August 1862 he enlisted as a private soldier in Co A., 39th regiment, Iowa volunteer, and served until the end of the war. On September 29, 1871 he wife died, and July 31, 1873 he was married to Marry Shutt who survives him.

He leaves besides his wife three sisters, Mrs. Geo. Shaver, of Patterson, Iowa, Mrs. Joshua Tate, of Rose Hill, Iowa, Mrs. Henry Grubb, of Stutgart, Arkansas, and many friends to mourn his death.

He was for many years past, afflicted with asthma and heart trouble. He tried all the remedies he could hear of, but none did any good. Last fall he concluded to try a change of climate and went to Oklahoma and landed at Mrs. Kephart’s daughter, (Mrs. S. D. Devoult) December 24, 1903. The trip worried him and for three weeks he was very sick and nervous. The last ten days of his life he appeared to be feeling a great deal better than usual; ate a hearty breakfast also a hearty dinner on January the 28, but at 4:30 in the afternoon fell from his chair to the floor and his wife and daughter lifted him onto the bed where at 4:45 he breathed his last without a struggle. The funeral was preached at 12 o’clock Saturday, January 30th, by Rev. Allison, pastor of the Union Valley M.E. church, Woods county, Oklahoma, and he was buried January 28th, 1904. M. K.
