Nila Louise Geisel

Nila Louise Geisel, 78, passed away Monday, July 3, 2017.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, Nila asked that donations be given to Good Shepherd UMC or H.O.P.E. Tutoring Center, Inc.

Nila was born in Winterset, Iowa on Dec. 6, 1938 to Erma (Imboden) and Maurice Thrailkill.

She graduated Valedictorian at Macksburg Consolidated School in 1956. She attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1960 with degree in history, and then did graduate work at Perkins School of Theology and Brite Divinity School. She married Edward H. Geisel, Jr. on Dec. 27, 1961.

Nila served over 30 years as a counselor for Jr. High and Sr. High church youth, sometimes paid but more often as a volunteer. It was a calling she felt strongly about. She also served as Registrar for two years at Dallas College (night school of SMU); and was a Pre-School and Music Teacher at Arlington Country Day in Arlington for three years. She was a Private in home piano teacher for 35 years; a founding member of Contact Telephone Ministry in 1972; and a Youth Minister and Program Minister at Good Shepherd UMC three years and seven years. Nila was Ordained a Diaconal Minister in the United Methodist Church in 1991; Program Minister at Aldersgate UMC for three years; Ordained a Permanent Deacon in the UMC in 1993; Laundromat Ministry for UMC for three years. Nila was Founder and Executive Director for 10 years at H.O.P.E. Tutoring Center. She was awarded "Director's Award" by the Metropolitan Board of Missions, 2001, "Woman of the Year" American Association of University Woman, 2002, and "Minister of the Year" Kiwanis Club, 2004-2005, before retiring in 2006.

Survivors: Husband of 55 years, Edward Geisel, Jr.; children, Bob Geisel and wife, Annette and their sons, Peter and Parker, and Howard Geisel and his wife, Taffy, and their children, Joey and Caroline; brother, Ramon and wife, Carolyn Thrailkill of Rogers, Ark.; sister, Lila and husband, Michael Huffman of Hartville, Mo.; and brother, George Thrailkill of Adel, Iowa; nieces, nephews, many cousins and lots of friends.
