Halferty, Edward (Ed) William (1915 - 1979)

Edward (Ed) William Halferty was born March 23, 1915 to William and Francis Wilson Halferty in Chariton. His mother, Francis, died when Ed was five years old and he was raised by his grandparents, father, William and step-mother, Mary Kendall Halferty. He passed away Monday, April 9, 1979 at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 84 years and 17 days.

At the age of 17, he went on his own, living and working as a bellhop at the Chariton Hotel. On June 29, 1941, he was married to Florence Gilliland. They were blessed with children Judy, Jim, Pat, Linda and a niece, Betty who was raised in the Halferty home.

For 30 years Ed and Florence lived at 216 South 12th Street and for 26 of those years, Ed worked at the First State Bank in Chariton.

He was preceded in death by one brother, one sister, one step-brother, and a grandson, Christopher Patrick.

Surviving are his wife, Florence; daughters Judy Osborn of Ankeny and Linda Fenley of Williamson; sons, Jim of Norfolk, Nebr and Pat of Green Bay, Wisc.; and niece, Betty Remster, of Knoxville; nine grandchildren and one stepbrother, Ivyl Kendall of Ottumwa.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the Fielding Funeral Home. Interment was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Oakley.
