Mae Fenley
June 26, 1911 ~ February 7, 2012 (age 100)

Mae N. Fenley, daughter of Asbery and Mary Ellen (Stoneking) Gladson was born June 26, 1911, in Monroe County, Iowa. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 7, 2012.

She graduated from high school in Monroe County and graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mae was united in marriage to Stephen H. Fenley on March 10, 1934. To this union two children were born: Marilyn Woodcock and Keith, both of Chariton. In 1941, she and Steve purchased their farm in Pleasant Township, where they lived until 1978 when they moved to Chariton and built a new home.

Mae taught school in Monroe, Marion, and Lucas counties and taught for Indian Hills College, in the outreach program, where one year she was selected as "Teacher of the Year" and delivered the commencement address and presented the diplomas, assisted by Senator Grassley. She and Steve worked with the Viet-Namese teaching them English and helping them with school work. They made special friendships which continued through the years.

She helped so many get an education. She was a Sunday School Teacher, a church worker, a 4-H leader, and held numerous other jobs. She was a volunteer for over twenty-five years. She helped at the Lucas County Home, was on the board at Auburn Manor and Tenco, and volunteered at the Chariton Manor.

Mae accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of the Assembly of God Church. In later years she was faithful to the Church of the Nazarene as long as health permitted. She took every opportunity to witness for her Lord.

She was a very hard worker, a wonderful cook, housekeeper, and homemaker. After her retirement she enjoyed trips, eating out, and spending time with family and friends. She was a grandma to many and loved it. Mae was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a faithful neighbor and friend.

Left to mourn her passing are a daughter, Marilyn Woodcock; a son, Keith (Linda); three grandchildren, Lisa Woodcock, Stephen K. Fenley (Tara), Robert E. Fenley (Jodi); two great-grandchildren, Skyler and Hayley Fenley; nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. ~ The Fielding Funeral Home, Chariton, Iowa 07 Feb 2012.
