HATFIELD, Melvin Austin
Melvin Austin Hatfield, son of Robert D. and Harriett Parshall Hatfield, was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, September 15, 1875 and departed this life at Yocom Hospital in Chariton, Iowa, April 14, 1959, at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 29 days.
He came with his parents to Russell, Iowa, March 1879, where he grew to young manhood. From the time of his youth he was affectionately called "Kid Hatfield."
On March 16, 1898, he was united in marriage to Nellie E. [Ellen] Wright. To this union, two children were born, Eddie, who died in infancy and Zella Glen.
His wife, Nellie, passed away November 23, 1954. In 1948 they had celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at home south-east of Russell, where they had spent many years.
Melvin joined the Masonic Lodge in the year 1925, American Lodge No. 637 AF and AM. In 1935 he was transferred to Lodge No. 63 at Chariton, Iowa.
He was of a family of nine children, five of them having died in Pennsylvania. Those preceding him in death here were a sister, Mollie [Mary Jane] May of Chariton, Iowa, two brothers, Calvin of Millerton and Lyman of Newton.
He leaves to mourn his passing a daughter and son-in-law, Glen and Thomas McKinley. A number of nieces, nephews and friends. Having spent most of his life near Russell he had many friends who will miss him greatly.
The past 2 years he has been in poor health much of the time and has been lovingly cared for by his daughter and son-in-law.
Funeral services were held at the Woodman Funeral Home Friday, April 17, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. A. E. Beals. Interment was in the Confidence Cemetery.
