MRS. J. W. MAY

Mary Jane, eldest daughter of Robert and Harriet Parchall Hatfield, was born Oct. 28, 1862, in Greene county, Penn., and died at the General Nursing Home in Chariton, Iowa, on Feb. 5, 1942, after a long illness, at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 7 days.

In March, 1879, she came with her parents to Iowa, locating in Russell, and Lucas county has since been her home.

She was married to John W. May in Chariton on March 24, 1880. They became the parents of 12 children, eight of whom, with the husband and father, preceded her in death.

She united with the Otterbein U. B. church in 1908, transferring her membership to the Chariton U. B. church when the family moved to town in 1920.

On Jan. 14, 1940, she was stricken with paralysis and remained in a helpless condition, suffering intensely until death came as a welcome release from pain.

Surviving her are four sons, Ellis E., of Russell; John R., of Albia; Chester E. and Floyd D., of Davenport; one brother, M. A. Hatfield, of Russell; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. Her parents, two sisters and five brothers passed away some time ago.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. J. Wesley Peterson, of the United Brethren church, were held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the Beardsley funeral home and burial was in the Russell cemetery.
