Robert) Vaughn Lewis passed away on Jan. 25 at his residence in Green Valley, Ariz. Born Aug. 27, 1924 in rural Cambria, Iowa, he was the third son of Hollie and Leona (Brewer) Lewis. He served in the Army in W.W. II. He graduated from Iowa State University as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and practiced 48 years in Chariton, Iowa, specializing in beef cattle. On Nov. 10, 1945, he married Joan Snelling of Park Ridge, Illinois, and they made their home in Chariton until 2001, when they moved to Green Valley, AZ.

Dr. Lewis was an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Chariton, served on the Chariton Community School Board and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho social fraternity, the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, the Masons, the Elks, the American Legion and the Knights Templar of Iowa. He was a past president of the Central Iowa Veterinary Medical Ass’n. and was a lifetime member of the American Veterinary Medical Ass’n and the Iowa Veterinary Medical Ass’n. He was well respected among his peers and in 1994 received the IVMA’s President’s Award. At one time he was one of eight veterinarians in the state to be selected by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture L.B. Liddy to serve on a legislation-needs advisory board. For 17 years he served on the Board of Directors of Midwest Heritage Bank of Des Moines and also served on the Chariton School Board.

He is survived by his wife Joan, daughter Wendy of Eagle Grove, Iowa, sons Clark and wife Kay of Sacramento, Calif., Greg and wife Sue of Scottsdale, Ariz, and four grandchildren: Amy and Matthew of Sacramento, and Jennifer and John of Scottsdale. Also surviving are his brothers Keith of Lebanon, Mo and Rex of Marshalltown, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and inurnment will be held late spring in Chariton.

The family has respectfully requested that in lieu of flowers memorials be sent to Opportunity Village, Box 622, Clear Lake, Iowa, 50428. ~ The Chariton Newspaper, Chariton, Iowa Thur 14 Feb 2013.
