Prof. J. K. Pickett, of Columbus Junction, well known to Louisa county people, departed this life Sunday at 10 o'clock p. m. Mr. Pickett was born in Ashtabula county, Ohio, August 9, 1824. and was the eldest son of a family of twelve children. His preparatory course was taken in Kingsville academy, after which he went to the Western Reserve College at Hudson, Ohio, where he was a classmate of senator Allison, of Iowa. In 1853 he was united in marriage with Miss Amelia C. Wilcox.

Mr. Pickett's life was devoted to education. He was principal of the seminary at Shaylorsville for a time also at Franklin, Ohio. He also had charge of the schools at Decatur, Ill., Cora, Pa., Independence and Sigourney, Iowa. Professor Pickett was principal of the Columbus Junction schools for fifteen years and did much to elevate them to the high plane for which they have been noted all these years.

He embraced religion in early life and united with the Congregational church, but later joined the Presbyterian church and honored by holding the responsible office of elder for many years. He lived a pure life and his end was blessed. He leaves a widow, son and three daughters, (one child having preceded him tot he spirit land) and a host of friends to mourn their loss. The funeral was held yesterday from the Presbyterian church by his pastor, Reverend Drew. Interment at Columbus City cemetery.
