Dr. Daniel Overholt died at his home in Columbus City, Saturday night October 27, 1906. He had been in his usual health up to the time, but had no been rugged since suffering from a paralytic stroke in January, 1902. He was born in Medina county, Ohio, September 11, 1838. Came with his parents to Iowa in the fall of 1852, when they settled in Elm Grove township on what is now known as the Kramer farm. Dr. Overholt inherited his liking an natural qualifications for the practice of medicine from his father, the late Dr. John Overholt, and early in life began to fit himself for this chosen profession. He attended medical school in Cincinnati as early as in 1860, from which institution he graduated later. Also was a student at the college of Physicians and Surgeons at Keokuk in 1866-67 where he graduated with the highest of honors of his class. He also graduated from the Bellevue Hospital of Medical College, New York City, in 1873.

Dr. Overholt was a man of wonderful activity and strong ambitions which carried him successfully through many discouragements and disappointments to success. He was a self educated man, paying his own way through the various schools. As a practitioner he was self-sacrificing; always ready to answer every call, from rich and poor alike, no matter what the inconvenience to himself. His gentleness and sympathy made him the friend as well as the healer of the sick. As a surgeon and a practitioner in the more difficult and perplexing medical cases he was far above the ordinary. In the medical and fraternal societies he took an active and prominent part. Was a member of the Columbus City Lodge A. F. & A. M., also Composite Chapter R. A. M. in which he was presiding officer for over twenty years. Was a member of Bethisham Commandary, K. T. and Kaaba Temple Mystio Schrine.

He was married to Isabella Latta, daughter of Judge S. M. Latta, of Levenworth Kansas, April 21, 1881. She died at their home, April 15, 1906. The surviving children are Dr. John Overholt, Columbus Junction; Mrs. Carl Latta, of Paton, Iowa; S. M. Overholt, Muscatine; Mrs. S.L. Daniels, Columbus City; and Roscoe Overholt of Chicago. Since coming to Iowa, his home has always been in this township except for the years 1867-72 spent in Grandview and 1873-4 in Leavenworth. His funeral occurred from the home Wednesday October 31 at 2 o'clock p. m. conducted by Rev. Long, of the Christian church, Burlington. The burial services were conducted by the Masonic fraternities and were of special concern to the members of the various Masonic bodies of this vicinity of whom he was distinguished member, on account of his thorough knowledge of Masonry and its teachings.
