Funeral services for Matthew D. Fiala, 26, Stanwood and formerly of Cedar Rapids, were held Jan. 15, 1994 at Saint Ludmila's Catholic church in Cedar Rapids, with burial in St. John's cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Matthew Fiala died Jan. 12 at the Anamosa Community hospital was a result of injuries suffered when a trench collapsed at the Anamosa Waste-Water Treatment Plant.

The son of Dave and Judy Carstensen Fiala, he was born Feb. 5, 1967 in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from LaSalle high school in Cedar Rapids. He married Kim Chabak May 2, 1987 in Cedar Rapids. The couple had lived in Stanwood for the past 2 years.

Mr. Fiala was a welder, operator and plumber for Fiala Plumbing and Heating at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife; 2 sons, Cory and Kevin, both at home; his mother and stepfather, Judy and Don Anderson, Cedar Rapids; his father, Dave Fiala, Cedar Rapids; his grandparents, Vince and Margaret Fiala, Cedar Rapids; 2 sisters, Nicole Fiala and Tonya Fiala, both of Cedar Rapids; a stepsister, Marci Anderson, Brunswick, Maine; a brother, Dave Fiala, Cedar Rapids; and a stepbrother, Chad, Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Aldenia Carstensen.
