Leo A. Ortner, 72, of 1929 J Street, S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa died Wednesday, October 6, 1993 in Mercy Medical Center after a long illness. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at Janeba-Kuba Funeral Home West, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m. and rosary at 8 p.m. on Thursday. Services: 2 p.m. Friday at St. Ludmilas Catholic Church, by Rev. Harry Koelker. A cremation committal will follow.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred; two sons, Donald L. of Toronto, Iowa and Paul A. and his wife Marie of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren, Hugh and Susan Ortner of Toronto, and Paul, Jr. and Timothy Ortner of Austin; and six brothers, Roy of Oelwein, Eugene of Dunkerton, Ronald of Wisconsin, Max of Waterloo, Victor of Independence and Dennis of Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Barbara; a brother, Hugh and a sister, Marguerite Schmitt.
Leo Andrew Ortner was born January 2, 1921 in Black Hawk Co., Iowa to Casper and Clara (Kurtz) Ortner. Since 1944 he had been a resident of Cedar Rapids, where he married Mildred Mahring on November 26, 1946. He was a retired cement mason and had been a custodian at the Sokol Hall for several years. He was a member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 909, Bowen General Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Cedar Rapids Lodge 262 WFLA and Cement Finishers Union Local 561.
