Sarah Wardle was born in Colerton, Leicestershire, England, February 28, 1797, and departed this life at Mt. Vernon, Iowa, July 30th 1890, having attained the ripe age of nearly ninety-four years. She came to this country in 1836, settling in New York, where she resided until 1849, when with her husband and family she came to Lockport, Illinois, and in 1864 moved to Grundy Center, Iowa, remaining there until about three years ago, when she came to Mt. Vernon. Her husband died in the triumphs of faith at Lockport, Ilinois, in 1854. Sister Wardle was converted at ten years of age and at once united with the church in her native land. Thus, for 83 years she has been a devoted and faithful member of the Methodist church. Such a record is as grand as it is remarkable. A long life of unfaltering devotion to the church and to every interest dear to her Savior, was followed by a peaceful old age, a quiet, but triumphant death. Of four children, two survive and were present at the funeral, Wm. F. Wardle of Lockport, Illinois, and Rev. Joseph Wardle who is an honored member of the Rock River conference. The funeral services were held at the residence of her daughter-in-law, Mrs Martha Wardle, with whom she has Iived for many years, on Friday evening, August 1st, at 7 o'clock, and the remains were taken to Lockport for interment, by the side of her husband. This venerable saint has enjoyed the loving esteem of the church for a long life time, has endeared herself by her many christian virtues, to large circle of friends in many places where she has lived and labored for God, and departs leaving to her bereaved children, the precious legacy of a name which is as an ointment poured forth. Eighty-four years of faithful service in the Cause of Christ! May this life be benediction and an inspiration to the whole family, and to the entire church
she loved so well.
