Bert S. Church, long identified with the meat packing industry in Cedar Rapids, died in a local hospital at 2:30 a.m. Saturday on his seventy-seventh birthday after a lingering illness.
He was superintendent of T.M. Sinclair and company in Cedar Rapids from 1903 until he retired in 1929 because of ill health.
He entered the employ of Swift and company in Chicago at the age of 15, and in 1891 was sent to England to study merchandising of meats in Europe. On returning to Chicago, he became an assistant in the management of Swift and company plants. Later he worked for Armour and company.
Mr. Church, who was born in Chicago, was married in 1891 to Alice Cook, who died August 1, 1913. An only son died in February 1912, while a student at Coe college.
He was a member of the Episcopal church, Elks lodge, Masons, and Shrine. For the last 15 years, he had lived at the home of Mrs. W.E. Lamey, 353 Park Terrace, SE.
There are no immediate relatives surviving.
The body is at the Beatty mortuary awaiting funeral arrangements, Burial will be in the family lot in Rosehill cemetery, Chicago. Friends ask that no flowers be sent.
