Irene M. Haerther passed away on October 26, 2018, at the Meth-Wick Community.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with a visitation at 9:30 a.m. The Rev. David Renfro will officiate. There will also be a visitation on Monday, October 29, 2018 from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Private burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Cemetery.

Surviving are children: Sandra (Steve) Siepman of St. Louis, MO; Diane (Charles) Haynor of St. Paul, MN; Steve (Sue) Haerther of Chatsworth, CA; and David Haerther of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Katie (Scott) Siddens and Tom Siepman; Ben (Deborah), John (Amy), and Nate Haynor; Cody (Katie) and Casey (Kristen) Haerther. There are six great-grandchildren: Isabelle Irene and Bennett Siddens, Charlie Haynor, Kane and Cash Haerther, and Colton Haerther.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Les, on March 24, 2010; her parents John and Caroline Pingel; four sisters and one brother.

Irene was born January 17, 1924 in rural Keystone, attended country school and graduated from Keystone High School and from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in 1945. She married Les Haerther on September 26, 1945. While he was completing his naval duty in the Philippines, she worked at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, CA. On return to Cedar Rapids she did nursing at the University of Iowa Hospital for three years, St. Luke’s for ten years, followed by 25 years as a volunteer at St. Luke’s. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and School since 1950. Activities she enjoyed were Camp Fire Girls, Boy Scouts, Audubon Society, Fourscore Club, Silver Sneakers, bridge, and had a great passion for golfing which she did until she was 93. She was a loyal fan of Hawkeye Women’s Basketball and held season tickets until 2017. She was grateful to be blessed with many memorable trips with family and friends, boating, camping, motor home traveling, visiting every U. S. state, nine Elderhostels, tours to England, Holland, Germany, Italy, Israel and in recent years enjoyed traveling with the Farmers State Bank Connect Club.

Memorials may be direct to Trinity Lutheran Church or donor’s choice.
