The Marion Register Thursday October 2, 1895
Obituary--Mrs. Geo. A. Lillie.
Mrs. Mary, wife of George A. Lillie, was born July 3, 1848, and died Sept. 24, 1895, in her forty-seventh year of her age.
She was native of Ashtabula, Ohio. She was married to Geo. A. Lillie on March 29, 1869, by Rev. Alex. Marshall. They resided in Linn county from that time until her death.
She, with her whole family, united with the Congregational church of Marion, under Rev. W.W. Gist some four years ago. She has always been an exemplary Christian woman and her works of pure beneficence have become known far and wide. She was an active worker of the local societies in the Prairie Chapel community and was always ready to assist them in all their work. She was a broad-minded Christian lady and recognized as having a heart as unselfish as a true disciple of the Christ.
Two adopted children, with her husband, are left to mourn her. Dollie E. McLellan and Edwin J. Lillie. There are also Lewis E. White, of Page county, Ia., Mrs. Caroline Withers, of Marion, and Oliver P. White, of Severy, Kansas, brothers and sister of the deceased.
As a wife, sister and neighbor, few have reached such distinction for devotion to the wants of the poor and needy as she, and none ever passed away more sincerely mourned than she.
The funeral services were conducted at the home five miles north of Marion, on Thursday, Sept. 26, by Rev. Jno. W. Geiger, her pastor, assisted by Rev. Walter Piper, of Prairie Chapel.
G.W. Toms, Mr. and Mrs. Voris, and Mrs. Hilliard rendered efficient service in the singing.
