Death of W.L. Lillie.
The funeral of the late W.L. Lillie, whose death occurred Monday morning, was held yesterday afternoon from the Congregational church. The services were conducted by Rev. A.D. Kinzer and beautiful music was furnished by Mrs. Norma Romes, Miss Blanche Kerr, Messrs. H.A. Sutherland and D.E. Voris. Members of the Robert Mitchell Post attended in a body. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Interment was in Oak Shade cemetery. The following obituary was read.
W.L. Lillie was born in Bethel, Vermont, Jan. 1st, 1842. He was one of a family of ten children, five of whom survive him.
In Vermont he grew to manhood, received his education and taught his first school. In 1862 he joined Co. G, 16th Vermont Volunteers. One of his last battles was the battle of Gettysburg. In 1868 with his brother, Geo. A., he came to Linn county, Iowa, where he has made his home ever since. For 21 years he and his brother, Geo. A. were in close partnership.
In April 1866, he was married to Miss Eulalia Lucore. Three sons and four daughters came to bless this union, all of whom with a devoted wife and seven grandchildren are bereft by his passing away. All of the children except Mrs. Bertha Mason of Cripple Creek, Colorado, were present at the funeral. "He was a good man, and a good neighbor," so all those who lived by him longest and knew him best testify.
A man clean in life, true in character and did well his part; a tender, devoted husband, a generous loving father, a good neighbor, a loyal citizen and a faithful soldier.
We trust that he has gone to the better things God has prepared for all his true children.
