Funeral Held Here Saturday Afternoon With Burial in the Family Lot
Mrs. Helen Keyes Giffen, for many years a resident of Marion, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jay L. Franz in Chicago, Wednesday evening of last week, following an illness of about a week of heart trouble. The body was brought here and funeral services were held in the Pingrey chapel Saturday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Harold Carlson of the Congregational church and burial was in the family lot in Oak Shade cemetery at the side of her husband, the late Judge James D. Giffen.
Mrs. Giffen is the last member of a family of nine and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Amory Keyes, prominent pioneers of this city who came here in 1843 from Ohio. She was born June 20, 1844, in Marion, and was married April 17, 1867, to Attorney James D. Giffen, who later became a judge of the district court. Mr. Giffen died in 1902, and one daughter, Mrs. Louise Parkhurst, in 1912. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Josephine Patton of Freeport, La.; Mrs. Bert Brett, Mason City, and Mrs. J.L. Franz, Chicago.
Mrs. Giffen was a member of the Congregational church and an active worker in all of its societies for many years. She lived here until four years ago when she moved to Chicago with her daughter.
Those here to attend the funeral were three daughters, Mrs. Josephine Patton, of Freeport, La., Mrs. Bert Brett, with Mr. Brett and their daughter, Marguerite, of Mason City, Mrs. Jay L. Franz with Mr. Franz and their son, James, Chicago, and a grandson, Henry Parkhurst of Davenport.
