The Marion Sentinel Thursday December 25, 1902
Sudden Death of Judge Giffen.
The city was shocked and deeply grieved Monday morning about 9 o'clock upon the announcement being made that Hon. James D. Giffen had suddenly died of heart failure at his late home in this city. He had attended services at the Congregational church Sunday night, as was his custom, and the next morning arose apparently in his usual health. After breakfast, just before leaving for his office, he began to feel badly and went to the telephone and had a talk with Dr. Moorhead and then went into the sitting room and assumed a reclining position on a couch. Later, Mrs. Giffen came in, and thinking he had fallen asleep in what she thought was an uncomfortable position, undertook to assist him to a more comfortable one. Becoming alarmed at his condition, she went to the telephone and summoned the doctor, stating she thought her husband was dying. He was cold in death before that gentleman arrived. We are told that Judge Giffen had not been feeling well for some time, and was troubled with suffocating spells, and had remarked the day before to his wife that he was afraid he was not going to live long.
Judge Giffen was widely known, having served as judge of the 18th judicial district for a period of twelve years from 1882 to 1894. He was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends, being a kind and good friend and a careful and painstaking lawyer. He was deeply in earnest in all his work and sought to perform his whole duty. As judge of the district court he tendered efficient and marked service to his state. His judgement was seldom reversed, and his work was highly commended. As a friend and neighbor he had no superiors. He will be greatly missed.
Besides his wife the deceased is survived by the following daughters: Mrs. A.J. Lawrence of Maquoketa, Iowa; Mrs. D.M. Parkhurst, of Marion; Mrs. Dora Brett of Mason City, Iowa, who was recently wedded; and Miss Minnie Giffen, who is studying music in Chicago. He also is survived by two sisters and a brother, Mrs. J.S. Alexander of Marion; Mrs. W.A. Durham, of Watsontown, Pa., who recently visited Marion, and William Giffen of Central City, Iowa.
The funeral services will be held this (Wednesday) afternoon at 2 o'clock at the late residence of the deceased. A biographical sketch of the deceased will appear in our next issue.
