The greatest sensation for a long period has been created by the indictment by the grand jury and arrest of J. L. Jenkins, Mayor of Central City, Wednesday of this week, for repeated attempted rape upon a fourteen year old step-daughter. The disgrace of the thing does not lie in the fact that Jenkins was an active man in political affairs, or that he was a strong candidate for representation of the late Republican County convention, but altogether in the deed itself, augmented in public acquaintances. There seems to be no doubt of Jenkins’ guilt and a consequential long-term of service in the penitentiary. – Mt. Vernon Hawkeye.
