I have been working on genealogy and came across the grave stone of a relative. He was buried at the IA State Penitentiary cemetery. His grave stone says b. 1881 d. 1949. Lee Co, IA, Ft. Madison. While I show he lived in Linn Co, IA...Wondering how I can obtain any info on why he was buried at the penitentiary and what crime if any he committed. There is great mystery around this specific relative....

Herbert was my Mother-In-Laws Father, and she also thought he was a Cherokee indian but I cannot find any info on that either....
