John F. Smith, 722 Concert street, a resident of Keokuk for sixty-six years and one of the city's most highly esteemed citizens, passed away at his home early this morning, following an illness of several month's duration. Mr. Smith had been in poor health since last spring and death was the result of maladies incident to old age.

The decedent came to Keokuk in the year 1850 and had been a resident here ever since. He was a carpenter by trade and was well known throughout the city, possessing a host of friends here who will learn with regret of his death.

Mr. Smith was born at Wertenberg, Kiachheim, Germany, on February 2, 1838. He came to the United States with his parents when he was nine years of age and settle first at Fort Madison where three years were spent. He then came to Keokuk and had resided here since.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Barbara Schulz of this city, and a brother, David Smith of Mobile, Ala. Also by his wife and the following four children: Miss Mayme Smith, Keokuk; George H. Smith, Chicago; Mr. G. L. Thompson, Mt. Sterling, Ill., and Mrs. H. M. Anschutz, Keokuk.

The funeral is to be held from the home, 722 Concert street, on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock.
