VETERAN OF SPANISH WAR PASSES AWAY
____

Attack of Grippe Causes Demise of Charles W. Kerns - Bedridden for Six Years.
____

Charles W. Kerns, a veteran of the Spanish-American war, passed away at the Lee county home at 1:10 o'clock this afternoon, following a severe attack of the grippe.

Mr. Kerns was admitted to the home on June 23, 1910, from Fort Madison. About six years ago the decedent was in an accident in which his back was broken. Since that time he had been confined to his bed, and although he suffered intense pain at times, he did not complain of his lot and was always of a jovial disposition.

The decedent was born in Athens, Mo., in 1868. At the outbreak of the Spanish-American war he enlisted in the army and saw three years service in the Philippines.

There are two surviving sisters and one brother: Mrs. Lucetta Payne of Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. Amanda West, Cedar Rapids, Ia., and M. T. Kerns of Charleston, Ia. There are also nephews in New Boston and Charleston.

The funeral arrangements have not been completed, but burial will either be made in Athens or Charleston.
