Edward P. McManus, postmaster
and prominent citizen of Keokuk, former state senator from Lee county, died this afternoon at 2:40 o'clock. He was sitting in his chair in his office at the postoffice, when he was stricken and fell. Employes in the office rushed to his assistance and picked him up, but he expired within a couple of minutes from the time he was stricken. His death was due to an attack of heart failure.

Mr. McManus was one of the most prominent men in Keokuk. He was of splendid character, upright and honest and one of the most influential and splendid men in Keokuk. In his home relation he was loving and kind, and to his friends in this city he was known far and wide as a sincere, big-hearted man. His sudden passing cast a shadow over hundreds of his friends, and their deepest sympathy goes out to the bereaved members of his family. Wherever the word was spread that Senator McManus was dead, it brought an expression of sorrow and grief.

Born in Keokuk
Edward P. McManus was born in Keokuk, June 26, 1859. His parents who were both natives of Ireland, were among the earliest settlers of this part of the state and were married in Keokuk where the family has always resided. He graduated from the common schools, afterwards taking a course in business at the Baylies Commercial college. Leaving school he engaged in school teaching for about three years. From this work he entered the employe of a Keokuk firm, and served as bookkeeper for three years, and then went on the road as traveling salesman for three years.

For eight years he successfully followed the occupation of stock man and agriculturist. He gave up this work to become part of the firm of which his father was head, a contracting firm. At the death of his father he associated himself with George S. Tucker under the firm name of Tucker and McManus. The firm has extensive interests and a large quarry near Keokuk. Since Mr. Tucker withdrew from active business a few years ago, Mr. McManus has been at the head of the concern.

Democrat in Politics.
Mr. McManus has been in the public eye more or less during the recent years of his lifetime, serving in the state senate for two terms as senator from Lee County, and was serving at the time of his death as postmaster. He has always been a democrat in politics and one of the most faithful men in his party. He was elected as state senator from Lee county first in 1906 and a second time in 1910. Two years ago Mr. McManus was appointed postmaster in the Keokuk postoffice, succeeding Dr. S. W. Moorhead.

Senator McManus was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic church, and was a faithful and devoted christian.

He is survived by his wife, three sons, Edward W. McManus, deputy county attorney, J. C. McManus and Thomas McManus, and one daughter Mrs. Kate McManus Hemmy. One daughter, Mrs. Anna McManus Cochran, died two years ago. Mr. McManus is survived also by his mother Mrs. Patrick McManus, and two sisters, Mrs. J. H. Breheney and Miss Mary McManus. A brother, Thomas F. McManus, died about four years ago.
