Obituary
West Point, Iowa (Special to the Evening Democrat). Herman Menke, 75 died at his home in West Point Sunday afternoon after a lingering illness. He was born in Akum, Hannover Germany, on September 15, 1854, and came to this vicinity when he was 17 years old. (Herman came over to the US from the port of Bremen to NY by his self at age 17, Sept 3, 1872 on the ship Bremen.) He has resided here since. He was married to Elizabeth Kassmeier on January 30, 1877, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fort Madison. To this union were born 14 children, 4 of whom preceded their father in death. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. John Menke, and John Menke of West Point; Sister Christina of New Orleans, La., Mrs. R. J. Manka, Mrs. Josephine Freitag, Mrs. Leon Watznauer, Mrs. Frank Hesse, and Herbert Menke of Fort Madison, and Mrs. Fred Werner of Racine, Wis.; the following brothers and sisters, Mrs. Fred Poepsel, Barney Menke, Houghton; Henry Menke, Lawrence, Neb. Gus Menke and Mrs. G. Harmyeer of West Point. and 33 grand-children and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic church in Fort Madison. Interment will be made in Gethsemene Cemetery.
