Sudden Death of Mrs. Mary Tope on Monday

Funeral service for Mrs. Mary W. Tope will be held Thursday Dec. 9 (today) at 3 o’clock at the Smothers Funeral home, Rev. Sterling Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in the West Union cemetery.

Pall bearers will be Harvey Tope, Bert Tope, Guder Peterson, Howard Van Sickle, Herman Hinsenbrock and J.S. Crowe.

Mary A. Wells, daughter of Willis and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Wells, was born Sept. 6, 1860 on a farm near Eldorado. She spent her entire life in this vicinity.

On Dec. 25, 1884 she married Jacob W. Tope, and to this union three children were born, Susie Tope Humphry, Glen and Hardy, all of whom preceded her in death. Her husband died in 1919.

She lived on her farm in Dover township until about two years ago, when she moved to West Union. She has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Guder Peterson since last March and died there Monday, Dec. 6, at the age of 83 years and 3 months.

Surviving are two granddaughters, Mary Frances Tope Holtzman, Waterloo; and Irene Humphry Anderson, Ames; two great-grandchildren, one sister, Ellen, San Pedro, Cal.; one brother Hardy, Greybull, Wyo.
