FT. MADISON MAN KILLED IN YARDS
____

Ralph Thomas Slipped on Ice and
Fell in Way of Switch
Engine.
____

FT. MADISON, Jan. 13. - Ralph Thomas, well known brakeman, 2332 Des Moines street, died from injuries received when struck by a switch engine at the west end of the Santa Fe yards at this city at 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning. He received a fracture of the skull and died after being removed to the hospital. He was thirty years of age and married. He was preparing to go out on his run when the accident occurred.

Mr. Thomas had been called to go out on his run on a west bound freight train and was standing on the front end of the engine and as it pulled off, swung off to go to the rear of the train. Just how the accident happened is not known, but the supposition is that in stepping off his engine he slipped on the ice and was thrown in the path of a passing switch engine. The accident was not discovered until the conductor on the way car of his train saw him lying alongside of the track. The train crew was notified and on reaching the injured man's side found him unconscious. He was removed to the employee hospital where it was found he was suffering from internal injuries about the head.

The accident is of a most deplorable nature, made more so as his wife is confined to the Sacred Heart hospital with a new born babe but three days old.
