Funeral services were held Monday morning, May 17, from Assumption Catholic church in Emmetsburg. Mr. Weir had been ailing for a long time. A week ago Friday, May 7, he went to a convalescent home, since the hospital in Emmetsburg was full. His relatives still hoped that he might be moved there, but his condition became worse and it became impossible to transfer him.

James Weir was born May 25, 1871, at Peotone, Ill., the son of Patrick and Bridget Weir. In a short time James began to attend Normal School in Algona preparatory for teaching and taught for many years in the surrounding rural schools. He served as rural mail carrier for five years. In 1911, he married Caroline Higgins in St. Michael’s Catholic church. Father Dullard performed the ceremony. They started farming on their farm now owned by Louis Germann and later moved to Bancroft, where Mr. Weir dealt in hybrid seed corn. Last January he bought a home in Emmetsburg and moved there.

He is survived by his wife and one son, William, and four brothers, Mike, Whittemore; John, Clear Lake; Pat, Emmetsburg. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
