Black Bear

The Fort Dodge Republican, of April 30, 1861, says that while Mr. Hiram Bellows was on his way from his home near Dakota City, to Fort Dodge, killed a large black bear. Bruin was crossing the road, when Mr. Bellows, observing him, unhitched one of his horses, and started in pursuit. After a chase of two or three miles, the bear was overtaken and dispatched by a load from a heavy, double-barreled shot gun.
