Biography reproduced from page 594 of Volume II of the History of Kossuth County written by Benjamin F. Reed and published in 1913:

August Huenhold, who is proprietor of the Algona Greenhouses and enjoys the distinction of being the pioneer gardener of Kossuth county, was born in Hanover, Germany, February 24, 1868, a son of Henry and Henriette (von Daak) Huenhold, both of whom were Germans by nativity. The father died August 15, 1897, and the mother passed away March 7, 1899. They were the parents of seven children: Ernest, who died at the age of twenty-two; Augusta and Louise, both of whom are living in Germany; Henry, who resides at the old homestead in Germany; August, the subject of this sketch; and Mary and Henriette, both of whom are living in Germany.

August Huenhold received his education in common and academic schools in Germany, where he was reared, and later took a commercial course in the same country. In his earlier life he worked for seven years in a nursery and seed distributing house, connected with a university, specializing in floral designing and decorating. He was ambitious to excel in his business and traveled extensively in his research for the best and most valuable ideas and information, and spent twelve years in all gaining a broad knowledge of which has been his life work. Anxious to seek wider fields of business and perceiving the superior advantages offered in the new world, he determined to seek his fortune on the other side of the Atlantic and embarked in Hamburg, landing at Castle Garden, New York, April 7, 1894, when twenty-six years of age. Having a friend in Algona, he came direct from New York to this place, where he remained for one year. He then accepted a position along his line of work in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he remained three and one-half years, after which he returned to Algona and settled in the north part of town, where he engaged in raising vegetables and fruits. He owns ten acres of land inside the city limits of Algona, and possesses besides valuable city lots.

On May 31, 1900, Mr. Huenhold was married to Miss Anna Mindemann, a native of Iowa, and to this union four children have been born, Norma, Helmuth, Alwin and Lulu. His religious associations are with the Lutheran church, of which he was one of the organizers and in which he is deacon, having also held the positions of secretary and treasurer.

Mr. Huenhold started in life with but a good education, good health, ambition and an inborn desire to succeed. Early and efficient training in the business world served to accentuate his natural qualities of integrity and industry, so that he brought to his business in Algona all of these virtues and traits so essential to a successful career.
