Colonel Shaw

SHAW

I am aware that colonel Shaw has no living relatives, yet I am hopeful someone could answer some questions I have about his coming to Anamosa. To me it seems rather strange that a man with no connection to Anamosa as a place would come here and after his trip from Anamosa to California return. At the same time marry his first wife in that very first year of returning. Miss Crane, his first wife, happened to live at Bowens Prairie. The house we know today as the Shaw Mansion was not built till the 1870's, where was his residence prior to the mansion? Was he, as was his cousin Robert Shaw, a confirmed believer of equal rights for all? Could he possibly have had anything to do with bringing slaves out of Missouri or the under ground rail road?
