LEROY D DIRKS

Services were held June 28 for LeRoy D Dirks, 65, at the Zion American Lutheran Church, with burial in the Wyoming Cemetery. The Revs. Steven Nelson and Thomas Johnson officiated at the services.

Mr. Dirks, Wyoming, died June 25, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

He was born on April 4, 1919, at Amber, the son of Gerd and Augusta "Kate" Husmann Dirks. He attended grade school in Olin but graduated from the Wyoming High School in 1939.
LeRoy served in the army during World War II from 1941 - 45. He served in the Philippines where he received a Philippine Liberation Ribbon and an American Defense Service Ribbon.

He married LaVerna Nowachek on Sept 7, 1946, in Davenport. The couple lived in Wyoming where LeRoy worked in the grocery store and farmed. In 1952, he began work as a lineman for Iowa Electric and retired from that job in 1978. His wife died in 1974.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran church, where he served on the council; a member of the Wyoming American Legion Post No. 259; and a member of the Wyoming Voluntary fire Department, where he served as chief for 14 years, honorary chief for four years and a member for 36 years.

He is survived by one son, Gregory Dirks of central City; one daughter, Mrs. Peggy Jo Johnson of St. Paul, Minn; four grandchildren; his mother of Wyoming; one brother, Clifford Dirks of Wyoming; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Baldwin of Wyoming and Mrs. Geraldine Yock of Cedar Rapids; and one sister-in-law, Mary Dirks of Monmouth.

He was preceded in death by his father, wife, one brother and one sister.
