Clifford A. Dirks, 76, of Wyoming, Iowa, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, in the Jackson County Regional Health Center, Maquoketa, following a brief illness. Celebration of life: 10:30 a.m. today, Zion American Lutheran Church, Wyoming. Burial: Wyoming Cemetery, Wyoming. A visitation was held Sunday at Lahey Funeral Home, Wyoming. Memorials may be given to the Zion American Lutheran Church or Camp Wyoming.

Clifford Arthur Dirks was born on April 21, 1932, in Jones County, Iowa, the son of Gerd and Augusta Kathryn (Husmann) Dirks. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. He graduated from Wyoming High School in 1949, and attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. He married Verona (Sandy) Sanderman on July 18, 1954, in Baxter, Iowa.

Cliff purchased the Mobil Service Station in Wyoming in April 1954, later the Mobil Bulk Plant and Auto Body. He retired in 2004, after 50 years in business.

He played baseball and loved watching the St. Louis Cardinals, summers at Delhi and winters in Yuma, Ariz. He volunteered for 50 years in the Wyoming Fire Department. He was a charter member of Little Bear Country Club. His greatest joy in life was his family and friends, hunting, fishing, golfing and going to the timber with his son.

Cliff is survived by his wife, Sandy Dirks of Wyoming; four children, Pati (Anthony) Ardovino of Camp Pendleton, Calif., Angie Hanna of Raleigh, N.C., Cindy (Andy) Bergstrom of Minneapolis, Minn., and Craig (Kim) Dirks of Wyoming, Iowa; six grandchildren, Madison Hanna, Mallory and Grant Dirks, Logan Ardovino, and Anna and Will Bergstrom; and a sister-in-law, Mary (Rodney) Walters of Wyoming.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his five siblings, Florence Baldwin, Leroy Dirks, Dorothy Hurst, Geraldine Yock and Donald Dirks.
