Virginia "Ginny" L. Bartels, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, at Northbrook Manor in Cedar Rapids. Funeral service: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Zion Lutheran Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment: Shiloh Cemetery immediately following the service. Family requests no luncheon following.
Ginny was born Sept. 29, 1927, in Amber, Iowa, to Henry "Hook" and Louise (Landherr) Dirks. She was one of five sisters. Ginny was baptized, confirmed and married in St Paul's Lutheran Church, Anamosa.
Throughout her life, Ginny was involved in church activities, which included teaching Sunday school, being a member of the church choir, the church circle, "Little Lutherans" children's group, Ladies Aide and Missionary Society, LWML, LFL and making quilts for Lutheran World Relief with her friends at Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha.
Ginny had an innate love of music and was gifted with a beautiful singing voice. She sang for many weddings and funerals. She also played the piano, organ, accordion, banjo and guitar, all by ear. Other interests included reading books, baking and cooking, gardening in her rose garden, writing poetry and playing bingo. Ginny loved easily and unconditionally. Her family will miss her hugs, her laughter and her "sit-down" chats over coffee.
Survivors include her three daughters, Bonnie Ireland of Nashville, Tenn., Nancy (Joey) Bolduc of Manvel, Texas, and Gayla (Don) Ohde of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters.
